The Power of a Plan
From an early age, Michael Hood learned the value of planning ahead when, due to an unexpected long-term illness, his father lost his medical practice. As devastating as that could have been for his family, the situation was made better because of his dad’s forethought and planning. “My dad understood and believed in the concept of risk management and because of well-placed insurance products, our family was able to maintain their lifestyle for many years.”
Unbeknownst to Mike at the time, this singular event would shape the course of the rest of his life and future career. “When my wife and I were expecting our first child, we knew this would change a lot of things; namely, she would quit her job and stay at home to help raise our children. While we planned on this for many years, we hadn’t entirely figured out how this would be done financially.”
Although Mike was working successfully at a Savings & Loan, his income was not going to be enough. Through a series of serendipitous events just before the birth of their first child, Mike was led to a career in the financial services industry and the rest, as they say, is history.
“I often think back to the naïve, optimistic, and soon-to-be first time father I was. I wonder what guts I must have had to quit a secure job and begin a self-employed career as a financial advisor, knowing my wife would not return to the work force ever again!”
Even though it was a difficult decision for Mike and his family to make, he has never regretted the valuable lessons learned - both good and bad. “It’s ironic that the very industry that saved my family’s life growing up has not only provided my family today with a livelihood, but has also led to many other families benefiting from the type of planning my dad instilled in me many years ago.”
Mike recognizes that insurance products alone cannot help people achieve their retirement goals. This is why he is also an Investment Advisor Representative. “At Hood Financial, we believe wholeheartedly in the role that appropriate investments play in achieving and maintaining a retirement lifestyle. We do fee-based portfolio management as part of an overall financial plan. However, equally important is to first make sure we are protected from the multitude of risks that can threaten our retirement lifestyle. Approaching retirement this way is just a critical as building the proper foundation to a house.”
At Hood Financial, nothing is more important than family and Mike knows that the way to keep families together is to help them prepare for life's unexpected events - both good and bad.
